confluence crashes after upgrade from 32 bit 5.4.2 to 64bit 5.10.1

I have an aging 5.4.2 install running on 32 bit linux and want to upgrade it and move to a newer server.

I've tried upgrading to 5.10.1. The install ran smoothly, confluence starts and is usable, but it will eventually crash. I've browsed logs, but haven't spotted anything obvious. Where should i be looking and what should i be looking ? Happy to post snippets of logs here if that's useful.
