Hi,
We currently have a 4.03 installation of Confluence that we are looking to change to the most recent version. Reviewing your documentation (and trial and error) shows that we can not simply take an export from 4.0.4 and import to a 4.2 installation, as they are not the same major version. So I proceeded to attempt an upgrade by completing the following steps:
1. Installing Confluence 4.0.3 on different server
2. Exporting space(s) from current server
3. Importing that into the new server. I was able to sign in and verify the data was imported successfully.
4. Running the 4.2.5 installer to upgrade Confluence. This ended in error.
Below is a snippet from the log file. Did this fail due to not having access to update the schema in the SQL database (which does not seem likely to me)? Or is it for some other issue?
I've attached the log files for reference. Basically the question is...how can we get past this issue to upgrade our Confluence installation?

Hi Craig.
If your instance is not very big, you can try to impor a site XML backup into Confluence 2.4.x as they do not have the mayor version limitation space imports have.
In other case, may be you should contact Atlassian Support for help.
