Trying to add our new license (issued today) to confluence generates an error. The plugin seems to install just fine, but the config screen shows this after I install the license.

I had to remove and re-install the plugin as suggested. Thanks.

Try to re-apply the plugin license again through the Plugin Manager > Manage Add-Ons and see if that helps. Ensure that the number of users for the plugin matches the number of Confluence users too.

If problem persists check this documentation (check on the symptoms) and see if it applies to your problem
