Secure Connection Failed

Daniel Santaella August 13, 2020

Dear community,

I was trying to install our own certificate (signed with our own CA) following the instructions of this article:

https://confluence.atlassian.com/conf67/running-confluence-over-ssl-or-https-945103713.html#RunningConfluenceOverSSLorHTTPS-serverconfig

The problem that I get all the time is the web browser saying 'Secure Connection Failed'

Error code: SSL_ERROR_RX_RECORD_TOO_LONG.

The version of Confluence I have is 6.10.1

Best regards,

Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Welcome to Atlassian Community. It's nice to meet you!

Generally, this error is due to a configuration error in the SSL setup.  In some cases that I've seen this, it was due to the non-SSL and SSL connectors are sharing the same port and redirectionPort. You'll want to double-check your server.xml setup to make sure that there are no typos or that these ports aren't shared.

I would also recommend running a scan at Qualys SSL Server Test and see if it can give you any further details.

Otherwise, the troubleshooting steps at Unable to connect to SSL services due to "PKIX Path Building Failed" error can also help with SSL setup issues.

If you continue to have issues, we'll need to see how you have configured your SSL, and any errors you come across in your logs or SSL scan.

Thank you!

Shannon

Hi Shannon,

I cannot run the first test because it is an offline server (intranet).

Just reviewed the server.xml configuration and both Connectors have different ports. Only the HTTP one has a redirectionPort specified.

Still, no way of making it work. What logs can I check to troubleshoot this further?

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Daniel

Hi Daniel,

In that case, you'll have to refer to your Confluence server logs to know how it's been improperly configured.

If you can share the exact steps and settings you have configured for your SSL, and what error messages and stack traces you find in your Confluence server log, then we'll be able to help you troubleshoot further.

Hello Shannon,

The steps I followed are the following ones:

Manually Backing Up the Site: to manually create my backups
https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/manually-backing-up-the-site-152405.html

Migrating to Another Database, method 2
https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/migrating-to-another-database-148867.html

Configuring Database Character Encoding to create a new DB with encoding UTF8 instead of C, which gave us problems with the new instance of Confluence
https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/configuring-database-character-encoding-177698.html

PostgreSQL Backup and Restore
https://www.postgresql.org/docs/8.1/backup.html

Upgrading Confluence
https://confluence.atlassian.com/conf70/upgrading-confluence-976757538.html

The problem comes when I paste the backup in the corresponding folder. I try to import it right after and gives an error in the attachments.

What do I have to look for in which logs? Where are they located?

Best regards,

Daniel
