Narrow right hand column layout in Confluence Cloud new editor

brendan_long April 23, 2024

Hi Folks,

I'm trying to switch my team over to the new editor now that we have migrated to Confluence Cloud, and I'm encountering some teething problems with functionality that has been removed or changed.

One that has really got me is that we have numerous pages that are laid out with a narrow right hand column, and I'm struggling to replicate it. I can see that I can use the native layouts to create a right hand column that is about a third of the window, but this is wider than what we are used to.

I tried looking at the section macro, but that has been deprecated. Tables are possibly an option, but I don't know if you can fix the width of the right hand column in a two column table.

Is there another option I haven't thought of? Advanced Tables macro with css?

Cheers,

Brendan

I am keen to hear if there is an answer to this as I'd really like a 25/75% column layout too

I raised it with Support and the best they could come up with as a workaround is using the 33% sidebar layout and popping a narrow table in there. Not ideal, as the main content window is still stuck at 66%. There is an enhancement request that I added my voice to.

I then tried playing around with the Advanced Tables app as we have that installed. There are some options in the Table Plus macro there to add html to a table. Applying "width:100%; border-style: hidden, width:350px; border-style: hidden" to the two columns (comma separated) gives you the layout, without the borders that are also hard to get rid of in the new editor. However, you can't nest tables in the new editor (as far as I can tell) so if you use a table for layout you can't then use tables in the content window. Also, the Table Plus macro takes a few seconds to load after the page loads which is clunky.

Table Plus also brings in a few extra features that you can disable to almost get the look we were after, but given the above (and a few other limitations with the new editor) we are sticking with legacy for now and just copying pages.

Hopefully this will change in the future.

Brendan, are those created using 'Layouts' with the new editor?  Layouts has a Right Sidebar with a narrower right column when compared to 'Two Columns which is pretty even.

You don't have any screenshots, so I'm guessing at what you're referring to.

Hope that helps.

Hi Dan, I've tried using 'Layouts' with the new editor - the right hand column created is 33% width and can't be resized.

In terms of column width, let's assume you wanted to make a right hand column which was 200 pixels wide for example. How would you do that?
