Looking for further explanation on Confluence site exports.

I was looking to do a quick backup of Confluence while we decided further on our backup strategy.

We host it ourselves on Google Cloud, so we already have snapshots saved.

Thought it would also be nice to have a full site backup stored elsewhere.  I selected "export" from the Backup & Export page.. and our confluence install went down, serving 502 server errors to our users.

I see this small entry on the official documentation page:

https://confluence.atlassian.com/conf615/manually-backing-up-the-site-967338450.html

"If you repeatedly experience timeout errors, try creating the export directly from the server. This will speed up the process and prevent timeouts."

Seems dangerous to have this export button not prompt or give any kind of status before causing server to timeout.  I ssh'd into the VM and stopped / restarted confluence to bring it back up as it was during a work day.

Should I do this during a scheduled maintenance window? I assume if I waited long enough it would have completed and things would have restored to normal.

Thanks!
