Is there any way to increase the character limit for comments on an attachment?

I'd like to have a more detailed description on an attachment, specifically for making the gallery macro more useful. Right now the descriptive text I'm adding to an image that's attached to the page is limited to a certain number of characters. Is there any way to increase this limit?

It's seems that there is a improvement request open for this already.
