How to turn off Cascade Nav Bar?

Matthew Morris February 6, 2025

The nav bar (on the left if that is what it is called) displays as a cascading nav bar, making it difficult to navigate. This only happens on one of my two computers, it happens in Chrome and MS Edge.
I've tried deleting my cookies and registry keys but nothing helps

Hi @Matthew Morris welcome to the Community.  I can reproduce this behavior, and I would say it's probably intended to work that way.  If a page is highlighted on the left and you click the plus (+)_to create a new page, it's going to create that page as a child of the selected page like you have.

If you click on your top level navigation before clicking the new page, then the pages should be able to be created in the same hierarchy.

For example: If 'Page A' is listed under 'How To Articles' and 'Page A' is highlighted, clicking the '+' next to 'Page A', it will create 'Page B' as a child of 'Page A'. But is you have 'Page A' listed as a child of 'How To Articles', and you click the '+' next to 'How To Articles', then 'Page B' will also be created as a child of 'How To Articles', not 'Page A'.

I hope that's not too confusing.  To adjust your pages, you should be able to drag the pages all up to the same parent, (if you have the right security access) and the nesting should go away.

Hope that helps.

@Dan Breyen, sorry if my question was misleading. I understand how pages work and that adding pages can be positioned under a parent. But the issue is that it's not displaying vertically and is cascading. I added a pic of my issue, so people can see my dilemma.
Worth noting, I have two separate computers, the same account, and one displays the pages/articles vertically, while the other cascades. This causes the pages to be displayed as "....". I can widen/expand the nav pane but that doesn't help when viewing a space that has an excessive amount of content.

I suspect it is a "view" thing, but I have been unable to locate and correct it. Our designated 'Confluence Expert" on my team has never seen this issue before and is not sure how to correct/fix

No worries, Matthew. I'm wondering if there's something different with the two PCs and their setup.   Are you using the same OS, same browser, and the same browser version?  Is the resolution on the monitor the same?  I know weird things happen with the zoom level on the display or browser is bigger than 100%, is that the same for windows as well as the browser? If you change the resolution of the monitor, does that make a difference?  What happens if other users login on your PC, do they experience the same behavior?  Have you tried flushing your browser cache & cookies? Just trying to eliminate some possible causes.

Hope that helps.

they are nearly identical in hardware and software, including screen resolution. Same OS and same browser. I've tried ME Edge and Chrom, I've deleted cookies and registry keys... no change. It's odd, my coworkers do not have the same issue looking at the same page.
There are a few pages where I can go too and it will properly align the pages vertically, this is mostly a hail-marry attempt at fixing something that has bothered me for over a year

@Matthew Morris I vaguely recall a similar post (in the last 19 months), but I'm apparently not putting in the correct words to search for it. 🙃 You might try searching in the Questions area.

In another post I found (https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Confluence-questions/How-to-change-width-of-the-Space-Content-Tree-on-the-left-side/qaq-p/2394282), there was a suggestion to check Console errors in your browser. As I've never opened the console for my browser, I cannot know what you might look for there.
