How can I use action items with context?

tstrahan_appen_com December 20, 2024
  1. I have some notes about an ongoing project
  2. I write down when I have achieved something
  3. But sometime there is a "next step" that I, or someone else, need to do to keep this project moving forward.
    1. To keep moving forward, I need to understand the context of the action item.
    2. So I need the action item to "belong with" its context.
    3. As a team, we need to know who is going to do the next task.
    4. Has Confluence ever been able to do this?
      1. In Confluence Server, any list item could also be an action item, so this was trivial.
      2. Some instance of Confluence Cloud allow action items to be a level of indentation, ie, as long as all of the <li> items in an <ol> or <ul> are numbers OR bullets OR action items, then action items could be embedded in a list.
    5. Can we have this in our current Confluence instance?
      1. [] @me Ask in the community forum how I can achieve this.
        1. The bolded line should be an action item. This indented text is just more context, follow-up, etc.
  4. I have used this style before at another company, and I don't understand why my current company does not have it. I assume it's some setting.
  5. Can anybody help me get this sorted out, or is it a feature request?

Hi @tstrahan_appen_com

At your other company, it was most likely an add-on from the Marketplace that allowed for related or nested action items/tasks.

You could ask your Atlassian admin to look thru the Marketplace to find something that would fit your needs.

However, your use case seems better fitted for Trello than Confluence, I would suggest looking into Trello or creating a Jira project.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll ask them to have a look in Marketplace.

This use case really is not for Trello or Jira, it's for "remember this one action item in this 50-line meeting minutes or problem-solving notes page which is part of an larger overall set of processes or notes", or on a documentation page where someone needs to fill in one particular thing, etc. In a perfect world the bigger action items get turned into Jira issues or Trello cards, but for the "@John add the expected completion date here" kind of thing, it's ideal. When it exists.

Also, without it, it makes the "Task Report" a bit pointless, when it can be an extremely useful tool that is completely lacking in Sharepoint and OneNote.

Update: I'm finding success by adding in fake lines of text, then going back and making indents, which can be turned into action items. I have the strong impression that I'm using a bug as a feature, but at least it seems to be working for me for now.
