Generate file thumbnail via API or code?

I'm trying to programmatically (using Java) upload a file and generate the thumbnail to preview it without the need to download . I made the upload part work through REST API but the thumbnail part is not covered in the documentation and I can't find anything related searching in the web. 

I want to do something like this:

Does anyone know if this is possible/how to do it?
