Confluence Whiteboard - elements unlocking randomly

Sarah St John January 30, 2025

Has anyone else experience elements on a whiteboard randomly unlocking.

I set up a whiteboard - lock all elements.

a day or 2 later I go to use the whiteboard to find all my previously locked elements now unlocked - often this is just as I'm using the whiteboard in a session.

99% sure that is is not someone going in and unlocking elements - as this happens semi regularly on most of my pre prepared whiteboards.

Is there any plan to include unlocking to 'whiteboard owners/editors?'

Hi @Sarah St John ,

Whiteboards do have the same restriction abilities as pages. For example, you could select which users will only be able to view/edit, or you could leave it open for everyone.

As you mentioned owners, it is also possible to change ownership of an item (page, whiteboard...) by following the steps mentioned in the official docs: Transfer ownership of your content item

As for locked/unlocked objects in the whiteboard, I would recommend checking it on one whiteboard which is visible only to your account (to see if that behavior will repeat). Additionally, you could check the whiteboard history to see what has been changed (and by whom) in the last 30 days.

I've tried checking JAC for open suggestions/bugs related to that, but didn't manage to find anything (although I've quickly scanned it): project=CONFCLOUD AND statusCategory!=Done and component = Whiteboard

If this problem repeats itself, you could try to reach out to Atlassian Support and see if they can recreate the issue you're experiencing.

Cheers,
Tobi

I find the editing restriction unhelpful - I want people to be able to interact with the whiteboard (i.e. 'edit') but just not unlock anything.

I will monitor whiteboards I have created and use the History feature to see what/who could be unlocking elements. (when it happens) It generally takes me by surprise..... i.e. set up whiteboard on Friday - run session the following week - as I share the whiteboard discover that all elements I know I locked are now unlocked.

Someone in one of my sessions suggested maybe there was a keyboard shortcut or something that might unlock all elements that is doing it (without me realising it) - is there?

I've just checked - there are separate shortcuts for whiteboards. This might indeed be the reason why some elements appear to be unlocked.

Specifically, for locking/unlocking it is Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + L

As for specific restrictions for locking/unlocking elements, Atlassian Support can check that out and potentially open new feature suggestions related to this requirement. 👀
