Comments disappearing from page

Jen Tuohy January 9, 2025

We have multiple users reporting that recent comments they added to a page have disappeared. This happened on different pages, and not in a case where the text the comments were attached to was being edited. Confluence status reports that commenting has no issues right now. Wondering if this is isolated to our instance or others are experiencing this?

thanks much!

Jen

Three shots in the dark... I vaguely remember three issues I encountered

 • some macros conflicting with comments - I believe that was fixed as it was a bug but one never knows especially with 3rd party macros. Worth checking.
 • Also... a comment applied over a restricted and non-restricted section of the content - included excerpted and text... theoretically possible and might explain visibility issues
 • an inline comment both being and not being 'there' as a result of a comment being applied to a chunk of text spanning multiple

elements. Those were edited in a way in which the comment was not applied to any visible text. That was surreal but it did happen to me a couple of weeks ago :)

Hi @Jen Tuohy

Sadly there is no way to track who edited/deleted a comment.

One way to deal with this is permissions.

Disable the DELETE permission, just keep the add.

That way only an admin or something appointed can delete comments.

Additional data point - it looks like some users are seeing different subsets of comments on a given page than others are. Definitely something going on here.

Hi @Jen Tuohy

Do a hard refresh of the page or log out and in again.

delete browser data.

There is nothing yet in the confluence status page.

https://confluence.status.atlassian.com/

If you still see this after all that, it might be worth contacting Atlassian to check.

Maybe this happens when users edit each others comments? This might be one possibility.

Thanks for the thought - this doesn't appear to be the case.
