Can an @mention be nested inside Macro Markup?

I'm trying to create an expandable task list, essentially:  

[]{expand:Brief task description}
Re-state the task here, providing any extra detail needed to complete the task. 
@user
{expand}

The two square brackets don't get detected as a Task list item, but that's minor.  using @mention does not work at all, where [user profile link] does work, but does not assign the task to user.  

Thoughts?

based on documentation https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/confluence-wiki-markup-251003035.html you can't do that.
