All gadgets are "uninstalled" after initial installation

I recently set up a trial installation of JIRA. All of the gadgets on the initial system dashboard are displaying the same error. They all display: This gadget was uninstalled by the administrator. Please delete it from your dashboard.

The error details are all very similar. One for example is:

no permissions defined: all rendering rejected by default

http://10.65.3.94:8080/rest/gadgets/1.0/g/com.atlassian.jira.gadgets:assigned-to-me-gadget/gadgets/assigned-to-me-gadget.xml

I'm sure this is a simple setup issue, but I cannot find any references to this issue via google.

I am running on Ubuntu Linux, 12.04 which was freshly installed. Let me know if you need any other information.
