Link issues to an epic you can’t edit

Hello, I'm Ahmud, a product manager from Jira Cloud.

We've been speaking with customers who have been affected by this bug. Adding an issue to an epic silently fails if the user doesn't have Edit Issues permission for both the epic and the child issue.

In our conversations with our customers, we have consistently heard that linking issues to epics in projects you can view but can’t edit is an important workflow they want.

We are excited to share that soon you will be able to link issues to epics in projects you can view but can’t edit. Previously, you needed permission to edit both the issue and the epic.

Will the ability to add an issue to an epic be controlled solely by who can view the epic, or will it be possible to allow people to view it and not to add issues to it?

Workflow Properties can be used to manage who can link issues to an epic, allowing users to view but not link issues. These properties are associated with specific statuses in your workflow, so you will need to apply the appropriate properties to each status.


For example, by using the jira.permission.link.denied property in certain statuses, you can prevent users from linking issues to an epic while still allowing them to view it. This property are applied to statuses such as 'Closed' or 'Resolved' to restrict the linking of issues allowing viewing without the ability to modify the epic.

@Ahmud Auleearthank you for your answer, but if I may summarize, that basically equates to "no" in answer to my question.

1. Workflow properties and not a scalable way to manage permissions at all.
2. It is new/fixed functionality to allow adding issues to epics you can't edit, but these workflow properties have existed for years, so this is not any sort of control being added to manage this new functionality.
3. It applies to all links, not specifically to epic links, which also makes it less useful.
