3rd party apps with plain text macros will now be compatible with the new editing experience

Hi team,

For those of you who’ve had 3rd party apps with plain text macros installed on their sites, we have good news - these will soon be compatible with the new editing experience.

For context, plain text macros are any macros that take text as the main input and convert that to a different output. We don’t have any plain text macros native to Confluence, but a number of 3rd party apps make use of them, and they’ve been temporarily unavailable in the new editor.

One of the main focuses with the new experience has been to make pages look the same while editing as they do when published, so you have more predictability and control over how your page looks.

In the old editor, you’d add the text in a box, as in the image above. You might have several lines of text, which would take up a lot of space while you were editing, but when you’d publish, you’d have a completely different sized and shaped output.

In order to make plain text macros look the same while editing as when published, we’ve moved the text input step into the macro browser. That means that when you add a plain text macro to your page now, you’ll first be prompted to add your text within the macro browser, and when you’re done, you’ll see the fully rendered output on your page. To edit that text again, just edit the macro.

This change has already rolled out behind a feature flag, so for any of you who need these macros to work in the new editor immediately, please let us know and we can enable this for your site.

For the rest of you, this change will go live in mid-June in order to give 3rd party developers time to make any necessary changes to their macros.

Thanks for your patience!

@Klaus Could you please enable this on https://artemis-dev2.atlassian.net/wiki and https://artemis-dev4.atlassian.net/wiki as well?  We have a plain-text macro we need to test this with.

Dear @spud ,

Is it possible to enable this feature for https://sharecatsolutions.atlassian.net?

Would be very grateful for that.
