What do greyed out commits on the branch screen mean?

When I go to my branches screen I see some commits are greyed out, as so:

What does this mean?

I think because of a merge they appear like that.

That's I what I thought at first, but there are other merge commits (marked with the 'M' in a box) that are not greyed out.

Does it have anything to do with whether the merge had conflicts?
