Bitbucket Server Migration - License question

Hello,

We are going to migrate our current Stash Server to a new server (new cloud provider) and to Bitbucket (update to the last version).

We would like to do this in a phased manner because we will also migrate our Bamboo instance at the same time. The idea is to do a project by project migration.

My question is, can we use the same product license on the old and the new Bitbucket server, while are migrating. This can take up to a month. By then, we would discontinue completely our old infrastructure.

Hi Carlos,

How were you planning to migrate on a project-by-project basis? Currently in Bitbucket Server you have two options:

1. Migrate the entire instance
2. Migrate only the source code of a project (using git clone and git push) but lose all metadata, such as a pull requests

You are absolutely correct. Our team didn´t think about that detail.

We are going to migrate the entire instance then.

We are running Stash 3.1.0 and we intend to move to Bitbucket Server 5.8.

While you are here, what do you recommend?

1. Create a new server with the same Stash version, migrate all the data and then update to the last Bitbucket version;
2. Create a new server with the last Bitbucket version and then migrate all the data and update it at the same time;

Hi Carlos,

I would always recommend taking those kinds of projects in steps - so either upgrade on your existing machine first and then migrate to the new machine or first migrate to the new machine and then upgrade. This way, if something doesn't work, you'll always know which step caused it to break, whereas if you make two changes at once you won't be able to tell.
