Best way to update AWS CLI on stock ubuntu Elastic Bamboo image?

The stock ubuntu image for Elastic Bamboo (ami-b1dd37d1) is using on old version of the AWS CLI (aws-cli/1.7.0 Python/3.4.3+ Linux/4.2.0-34-generic). What is the best way to update this tool? Should I add a step to update it in the startup script?
