Automation for Jira

Jira automation is a combination of triggers, conditions and actions.

  • Trigger answers the question: When should automation start? For instance, when some event happens – an issue status is changed.
  • Condition sets the rule to narrow the scope. For instance, if the issue type is a bug.
  • Action is the event that happens when the trigger and condition are met.

You can build a rule for any task or process without coding. There is a library of templates that makes the automation more simple. You can look through a variety of resources, starting with the fundamentals: How to create rules?  and Jira automation template library.

How to create an automated recurring ticket

  1. Select the scheduled trigger, the frequency of the ticket (i.e., the time and date), and the new action.
  2. When creating an issue, be sure to choose the issue type as task and explicitly. Select your project from the drop-down list (instead of using the default one).
  3. After saving it, run it. You can create a recurring ticket automatically in this manner.

Jira Automation is free, but it has some limitations you should take into account. It depends on the Jira subscription plan you have. The more expensive it is, the more Automation rule’s events system can run.

Jira gives you the option to build the Automation either globally or for a single project, depending on your plan. If a process calls for the participation of a few Jira projects, you will need to configure the Automation in each project's setting, which will have an impact on limits.
