To ensure comprehensive tracking of requirements and their implementation across different levels of a project, it’s important to have both Vertical and Horizontal Traceability.
Vertical Traceability refers to the tracking of requirements through the hierarchical levels of the development process, from high-level business requirements down to detailed technical specifications, design, code, and test cases. It shows the alignment of requirements through all stages of the development lifecycle, linking artifacts from top to bottom. Its goal is to ensure that every high-level requirement is fully realized through corresponding lower-level specifications and tests.

Horizontal Traceability refers to the tracking of requirements and artifacts across different components, modules, or teams within the same stage of the development process. It highlights the interdependencies and interactions between various system components at the same level, such as different modules in the design or different test cases in the testing phase. Its goal is to ensure that related components are consistently developed, integrated, and tested and that changes in one area are properly communicated and coordinated across the system.
