🎄Christmas came early this year: clone and synchronize issues across instances 🥳

The Elements Copy & Sync team is thrilled to announce a powerful new feature: clone and synchronize your issues across different Jira instances!

This feature is designed to enhance your workflows by allowing you to replicate and update issues seamlessly between environments, helping teams collaborate more effectively across multiple Jira instances.

Why use cross Jira instances cloning and synchronization?

There are many situations where cloning and syncing issues between different Jira instances and projects can make your life easier:

  • Escalation between different teams: Imagine you have a support team using Jira Service Management (JSM) and a development team on a separate Jira instance. Now, when a customer issue needs escalation, you can clone and sync the issue directly between the two instances, keeping both projects in sync. Workflows and status can also be synchronized for a better cross-team collaboration.

  • Cross-country teams: If your teams are located in different regions and working on separate Jira instances, this feature helps keep everyone aligned without manual duplication of tasks.

  • Collaborating with external partners: Often, businesses collaborate with external partners or contractors using different Jira environments. This feature allows you to clone issues into their Jira instance and keep them synchronized, enabling seamless collaboration without requiring full access to your own instance.

What can you do with this feature?

With Elements Copy & Sync’s cross Jira instances cloning and syncing, you can:

  • Clone issues: Move all the details of an issue—such as summary, description, custom fields, labels, assignee, comments, and attachments—from one instance to another.

  • Synchronize issues: Set up unidirectional or bidirectional synchronization, so that any changes made in one instance automatically update the cloned issue in the other instance. If you plan to sync bidirectionally, ensure that Elements Copy & Sync is installed on both instances.

This functionality is ideal for teams that frequently work across separate Jira projects and instances but need to stay aligned and up-to-date on critical tasks.

How to set it up

Setting up cross-instance cloning and synchronization is straightforward. You can follow our step-by-step guide here, which will walk you through selecting the target instance, configuring field mappings, and enabling synchronization.

Key Steps:

  1. Choose your target instance: When cloning an issue, select the Jira instance and project where the cloned issue should go.

  2. Configure synchronization settings: During the cloning process, you can map fields and enable synchronization to ensure that any updates made to the original issue are reflected in the cloned issue. Keep in mind that bidirectional sync requires Elements Copy & Sync to be installed on both instances.

  3. Copy attachments and comments: You can choose to include attachments, comments, and issue links during the cloning process to make sure all relevant information is transferred.

Why is remote instance cloning and synchronization a game-changer?

Previously, Jira's built-in clone and move functionalities only worked within a single instance. This posed challenges for organizations that operate across multiple instances, particularly when teams needed to collaborate on shared tasks or escalate issues between different environments. With this new feature, those barriers have been removed.

Here are some of the key benefits:

  • Seamless cross-instance collaboration: Teams using different Jira environments can now collaborate effortlessly. No need to manually recreate issues or worry about lost data—cloning and syncing ensures smooth communication and collaboration across teams.

  • Increased efficiency: For organizations with multiple Jira environments, this feature reduces manual processes, allowing teams to focus on their work instead of administrative tasks like duplicating issues.

  • Data integrity maintained: All critical data, including custom fields, attachments, and comments, is transferred from one instance to another, preserving the integrity of the information.

  • Real-time updates: With synchronization in place, changes made in one instance are automatically reflected in the other, keeping everyone aligned and reducing the risk of miscommunication.
