Does anyone know how to create issues from email with a specific issue type/due date/etc?

I'm looking for a way to create an issue from an email with a specific issue type and possibly a due date. It seems that the only plugin for this is unsupported. Advanced Mail Handler (https://plugins.atlassian.com/plugin/details/5215) Is anyone familiar with this or currently using it? How does it work? Or do you have any options for ways we can accomplish this task? We are currently on 4.1.1 but are looking to upgrade in the near furture.
