We use the Cloud version - and we noticed that in the last 2 days the left side navigation icons are now is a menu bar we need to select to open. Can this be reverted back to icon view or was this a platform change?

The New collapsed navigation was introduced on Atlassian Cloud changes Oct 8 to Oct 15 2018 and this feature will be rolled out to everyone soon.
To open the sidebar, you just need to hover the mouse over it.
We already have a feature request suggesting that the sidebar gets collapsed even if we hover the mouse over:

If you have any suggestion about the new sidebar, please let us know.

Thanks, I just prefer the icon view. It would be nice if as 'features' are added, cloud users have the option to accept the new view.
