Confluence Public Access vs. JIRA Users

Question

Hi there,

I configured Confluence (and one of our spaces) so anonymous users can view an help page, which works fine.

But if the anonymous user logs in into our JIRA (which he has access to), he don't have access to the public space because he is not anonymous anymore. He sees following message:

Not Permitted
You are not permitted to perform this operation.

How could we make a Confluence space "read only" for JIRA users so we don't have to put them in the Confluence licence?

JIRA and Confluence share user management, so although they are different applications there is only one "instance". If you're logged into JIRA you will not be anonymous because you are logged into the "instance".

To allow JIRA users to access the same spaces as Anonymous users, give the JIRA users permission to access Confluence, then set up a group in User Management and add the JIRA users to it.  Then give that group the same View permissions as your Anonymous users.  Make sure you remove your JIRA users from the default confluence-users group.

The one drawback to this is that each of the JIRA users will be counted against your licence cost for Confluence, which you've said you don't want to do.  However, if you're not close to using your licence allocation for the tier you're in, this won't cost you anything extra.

If you don't want to do this, the clunky workaround (until Atlassian provide a better solution) is for your users to log into JIRA in one browser and access Confluence anonymously through another.  (If they use the same browser they'll have to keep logging out of JIRA to view Confluence and then back in again when they've finished viewing Confluence.)

This is a known issue but I cannot find the JRA that has the information about it. Try searching for it.
