Swim lanes are set by story. I used to see the story status in the swim lane (like the help file screenshot), but I can't see them any more and I can't find a setting to change the behaviour.

You can't. Looks like they may have removed it with the card layout updates.
You can create a JIRA ticket in their backlog and see if they'll add it back in.https://jira.atlassian.com/issues?jql=filter=allopenissues
Very Very annoying...
It is very hard to track your project now with no statuses, need to press one by one to see...
Not sure why they are removing features so vital when they actually lack some of those already...
