adding columns to kanban board needs to have more statuses

I want to use kanban and added a new column like "backlog". Now I have to put the status that is depending on the column to each of these. but as it is only possible have one status on one column, I cannot se how to get issues into backlog? Do I have to add more status to map each of it to a single column?

You should convert the project workflow to "simplified" and then you must create issue statuses for each (new) column you want. Issues are shown based on their status on the boards.
