I have the same question, but how to do this with the latest JIRA version 1000.253.3?

Okay. It works. I couldn't find the General Configuration at first. It's just filed under System...

Administration --> System --> General Configuration --> Advanced Settings (button at the bottom of the page) --> jira.table.cols.subtasks.

As per 5.x instruction, although I don't know if that is a "restricted function" on Cloud - if it is, you can try asking Atlassian support to change it, but I'm not sure if they will.
