Do your JIRA and Confluence instance versions have to be identical

Updating to the newest Confluence was a horrible decision, with the loss of the wiki markup editor and buginess of the rich text editor. We are looking at rolling back Confluence, though JIRA works just fine and we are happy with it. Is it possible to have an Atlassian environment where Confluence is an older version than JIRA? We would like to return to version 3.5 of Confluence, and in an attempt to minimize pain we would like to keep version 4 of JIRA as it still has wiki markup and all functionality that we need.

We will also be moving from On Demand to Downloaded version.

Is that possible?

Hi,

Confluence and JIRA instance versions do not need to be identical and it's perfectly fine to have Confluence 3.5.x integrated with JIRA 4.x.

The problem is going to be that the data conversion process when you upgrade Confluence is one-way, there is no downgrade path to take Confluence 4.x content and downgrade it so that it can be imported into a 3.5.x instance. It may not be a huge issue if you have a backup of your 3.5.x content that you took prior to upgrading or moving to OnDemand as you can use that to import into a 3.5.x instance, but anything that was created after the upgrade would need to be manually re-entered.

It may be possible to reverse engineer the 4.x content to downgrade it for 3.5.x, but I'm not aware of anyone who has done this.

If you want an export of your OnDemand data you can raise a support ticket in the OnDemand project at http://support.atlassian.com and ask Atlassian Support to create the export for you.
