Asset object avatars in the UI - only on create?

Are you genuinely limited to adding an object avatar in the UI when you create the object the first time?

I can see the avatar in the object details, but there is no UI action to edit or change it. I can't upload an image as an attachment and then set it as the avatar.

Also slightly confusing UI in the create screen - refers to it as "icon" but shows as "avatar" in the object details.

I've seen that there's a way to upload avatars using the REST API, but that's beyond my skill level - I just want the use the UI. I only have a few object avatars to add, it's for the standard hardware catalogue for a Request Type.

Any tricks I am missing here?
