How can I set up actors for flows in our sandbox?

Hi,

For some reason, I can't see the “actor” field in the automations anymore. How can I set an actor now?

For example, I want to create a rule where AI writes a comment, but I don't want it to be the case that only I personally write the comment.

That's only the case in our sandbox. In our live environment, I can still see the actors and configure them. How can I get that to work in our sandbox as well?

Hi @Antonia,

The Actor option hasn't been removed. It just isn't inside the Add comment action. You set it once for the whole flow. Automation rules are now called flows, so the setting is under Flow details.

How to set it:

* Flow builder: Select Flow details and change the Actor. Create automation flows in Jira | Cloud automation Cloud | Atlassian Support
* Flow built with Rovo in Studio: Use the more menu (…) in the top right to change the Owner and Actor. Create automation flows in Jira | Cloud automation Cloud | Atlassian Support
* Existing flow: Go to Project settings → Automation, or for global flows Jira → Settings → System → Automation flows. Open the flow and pick a user under Actor. Run Jira flows as another user | Cloud automation Cloud | Atlassian Support

So the comment isn't posted under your name: Set the Actor to Automation for Jira. Every action in a flow shows as done by its actor. What is a flow actor? | Cloud automation Cloud | Atlassian Support

Who can choose which actor:

* Project admins can only choose themselves or Automation for Jira.
* Global admins can choose anyone.
* Users from Marketplace apps can't be chosen as an actor.

Hello @Antonia

Atlassian moved the Actor setting from Flow details.

Open your flow, then go to More (⋯) → Settings → Actor.

This change was announced in the August 2026 release notes:

There's also a known sandbox limitation in which the Automation for Jira user doesn't appear in the user picker:

When the "Actor" field is missing in Jira Cloud automation rules configuration, it is typically because the atlassian-addons-project-access project role is missing from the project's permission scheme.  Please review the permission scheme setup.
