Is there a way to display the work type name in the work item details view?

Is there a way to display the work type name (formerly called the issue type) as a field in the work item details view—the screen users see when they open a work item?

I’m not looking to add it to the create or edit screen. I’d like users to be able to see the work type name in the details area, alongside other fields. I can’t find the work type in the fields available for the details layout in my current setup.

There isn't currently a native way to display the Work Type (formerly Issue Type) as a configurable field in the work item's Details section. The Work Type is displayed in the work item header and is not available in the list of fields that can be added to the details layout.

As a workaround, you can create a custom field (for example, "Work Type Name") and populate it with the work type value:

Option 1: Jira Automation

• Create a custom field to store the Work Type name.
• Use an automation rule to copy the Work Type value into that field when a work item is created or whenever its type changes.
• Add the custom field to the work item layout so it appears in the Details section.

This approach works well when the requirement applies across multiple work types or projects.

Option 2: Workflow Post Function

• Create a custom field to store the Work Type name.
• Add a workflow post function that copies the Work Type value into the custom field during a workflow transition.

This can be a simpler approach when the requirement is limited to one or two specific work types and is tied to a particular workflow process.

Regardless of which approach you choose, a custom field is required, since the native Work Type field cannot be added directly to the Details layout. You can then use either Automation or Workflow Post Functions to keep the custom field synchronized with the actual Work Type value.
