Backlog Ranking not reflecting despite being enabled in Jira Cloud

On my Scrum Board, the Board Filter has the required 'ORDER BY RANK ASC" , and hence the Rank shows enabled.

Ironically, when I drag and drop (or use Move up or down) the issues in the Backlog, the change does show at the moment, but when I refresh the page, the issues are back to their original position.

And the weird part is, when I edit the Board Filter & remove the Rank, the Backlog then appears to have the ranking order which I previously tried to change.

Example:

With Rank, Lets say I'm trying to move 2 above 1.

Result after refresh:

Issue 1

Issue 2

Remove Rank from Filter,

Result:

Issue 2

Issue 1

Update the Filter again to have Rank,

Result now:

Issue 1

Issue 2

Makes no sense ??? Any help is much appreciated

As mentioned remove the order by from your filter. Refresh your board andc in the filter details enable rank.

Also make sure you have the permissions; 'Schedule work item' and 'Edit work item' for the work item you want to move.

Is there any duplicate Rank field?

Can you check in custom fields and try to rename like rank (old/duplicate) (recommended way)

Check if your board uses the Global Rank and see if it makes a difference?

But if I do that, I cannot drag the issues in the Backlog and re-arrange them based on how I want to rank them.

Hello ! Thank you for the comment. Yes I did check that, there is no duplicate Rank field.
Also, the Rank field is set to Global Rank

How do I check if the board uses Global rank ? There is no other concrete method to configure the ranking except for adding the ORDER BY RANK ASC to the Board filter, right ?

So, I tried this way. And it works in the Backlog. But inside the Sprint, It doesn't reflect the rank changes. It lets me change the rank, but once I refresh, its back to the previous order.

Hi,

An Active Sprint board display order is independent of where issues sit or how they are ranked in the Backlog view once work starts.

When an active sprint starts, issues appear in the "1st" column sorted by rank. However, as soon as you drag cards across columns (like "In Progress" or "Done"), Jira groups and sorts them primarily by Status/Column rather than strict rank.

The options you have for more clarity on the Active Sprint board are:

Use Swimlanes: Group your Active Sprint by Swimlanes
Card Details: Use on indicators like Priority or Epic labels on the cards

Otherwise you only option is to accept the look and feel, you need to understand that the Backlog is your main view for planning, and that the Sprint board is purely a status-based workflow board.

I'm not talking about an active sprint. Lets say I have grouped the issues for the upcoming sprint. Can the issues not be ranked within this future Sprint ? Also, sometimes, when I refresh the issues goes back down in rank (about halfway down).

Check if the ORDER BY Rank is included after a different ordering property.
To be able to Rank an issue on your board, Ranking needs to be the primary sort parameter. And also sort issues by ascending rank.

Example: ORDER BY Rank ASC, priority DESC

Yes, for now the filter associated with the Board is the most basic one,

Project = ABC ORDER BY Rank ASC

Hi @Aisha M,

I would also check whether the board filter is a saved filter you actually own or have edit rights on, because if the ORDER BY clause keeps reappearing, the board is loading the saved filter rather than your edited version. If the order still reverts with a clean filter, I would open Settings > Issues > Custom fields and confirm there is only one Rank field and that it is in the field configuration for those projects, since a leftover second Rank field makes the backlog sort by a field your drag and drop never writes to.

Have you checked for schedule and edit issues permission? If the board is with multiple projects, make sure they all have permissions (roles, groups)

Rank field is associated to Global context?

Any integrity issues with lexo ranking?

You can also quickly see why this is causing:

Open your browser's Developer Tools (right-click > Inspect).
Go to the Network tab.
Reproduce the issue, or drag and drop an issue in the Backlog.
Look for the errors/failed request, something like
- 403 Forbidden: Permission issue (Schedule Issues / Edit Issues).
- 400 Bad Request: Conflict in JQL ordering, multi-project context, or LexoRank integrity issue.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. So, in the general scrum backlog, I'm able to drag and drop issues without problem.

But, within a future sprint/current sprint, I'm able to rank them only to a certain extend. Sometimes the issues move below when the page gets refreshed. Is it due to how Lexorank is configured within Jira ?

Also, I did check for the 403/400 error. Nothing as such
