New Reporter / Watcher notifications for status change

Question

Since yesterday, I and other PMs have been flooded with Jira notifications about tickets being reassigned or changing status. We didn't use to get those, only when tagged on comments. We are reporter (and watchers) on those tickets, but we didn't change any setting to incur this new notification wave.

How do I stop this, not at a user preference level, and was there a Jira update across the board?

Update: I unwatched all my created tickets, changed every notification settings I could find, and I'm still inundated with notifications. Clearly something changed Jira side?

I did. But why did these notifications start being sent when we didn't touch our settings?

Like @Nikola Perisic  said, the root cause probably lies in a notification scheme setting.

Individually you can change your own incoming notifications here: https://<mysite>.atlassian.net/jira/settings/personal/notifications

With 'add space notifications' you can tune down on the notifications of a specific space.
