Change color for a Cover for a Card automatically based on status

We are looking to improve the visual representation of work items on our Jira board. Is it possible to automatically assign different card cover colors to user stories based on their status (for example, To Do, In Progress, Blocked, Testing, and Done)? If this is supported, can it be achieved through native Jira settings, card colors, automation rules, or Marketplace apps?

Hi Tahir,

Yes, this is fully native — no automation or apps needed. There's a "Card Colors" option in Board settings:

1. Next to your board's name, hit More actions (•••) > Board settings

2. Expand Layout > Card Colors

3. There's no direct "Status" preset in the method dropdown, but you can pick "Queries" and set a JQL condition per color, e.g., status = "Blocked" → red, status = "In Progress" → yellow, status = "Done" → green, and so on. If a card matches more than one query, whichever one you added first wins.

One thing to watch out for: this only works on Company-managed projects. If you're on Team-managed, card color customization isn't available at all, you'd have to migrate to get it.

Worth checking your project type first under Project Settings > Details before setting anything up.

Hello @Tahir_Mohammed , building on @Varun Chillamcharla pointer to Card colors, here's the part that answers your "based on status" specifically.

In the Select method dropdown the built-in options are Work type, Priority, Assignee, and Query. Status is not one of the direct options, so the way to color by status is the Query (JQL) method, with one color rule per status. Each card takes the color of the first query it matches, and because the rule is evaluated live, a card automatically recolors the moment its status changes. That gives you the automatic behavior you want with no automation rule and no app.

Steps (company-managed board, you will need board admin or Jira admin):

Next to your board name, select More actions, then Board settings.
Expand Layout, then select Card colors.
Set Select method to Query.
Select Add color and create one row per status, for example status = "To Do", status = "In Progress", status = "Blocked", status = "Testing", status = "Done", picking a color for each.
Order matters: put the more specific queries higher, since each card takes the color of the first query it matches in the list.

Two notes. This colors the card to match the banners in your screenshot, and it updates on its own as work moves across the board. If your board is team-managed rather than company-managed, the Card colors options are more limited, so let me know which board type you are on and I will adjust. Everything above is native Jira Cloud, no Marketplace app needed.

Native Jira can help with this:

Card colors on Company-managed boards — go to Board settings → Card colors and select "Colours based on Queries". Then define a JQL query per status (e.g., status = "In Progress", status = Blocked) and assign a color to each. This adds a colored strip to the left edge of each card — the closest native equivalent to what you're describing, and it updates automatically as statuses change.
Card covers — actual card covers (the full-color bar/image) in Team-managed boards are set manually per issue and can't currently be driven by automation rules, so there's no native way to auto-change cover colors by status.
Automation rules — Jira Automation can transition issues, edit fields, etc., but it doesn't have an action for card colors/covers, so it won't help here.

So if a JQL-based color strip is enough, native card colors will do the job; a fully colored card based on status requires a Marketplace app.

Additional visual cues — you can also color issues automatically by Epic, manually mark individual tickets with one of 12 colors when something needs attention, and display extra fields (status, priority, custom fields) right on the issue bar.

This applies to ActivityTimeline's planning dashboard rather than the native Jira board itself, but if your goal is a visually clear, color-coded view of team work by status, it covers that out of the box.

Two different things control colour on the card, and it helps to name them separately. The Card colors setting we described renders as a thin coloured strip on the left edge of each card, and that strip is what changes automatically with status via the Query rules. The cover is the larger banner area at the top of the card, and covers work differently: they are set manually per work item (hover the card, More actions, Select cover, then pick a colour, gradient, or image), and there is no native way to drive a cover colour by status today. There is an open suggestion with Atlassian for exactly that. So if the automatic left-edge strip meets your need, the Query setup gets you there; if you specifically want the top cover area to change colour with status, that part is manual only for now.
