We’re excited to announce that we’ve officially kicked off the Early Access Program (EAP) for the modernised Jira board for company-Managed spaces. Here we’ll cover off the upcoming changes to the board experience and how you can sign-up for early access.

We're keen to invite 2-3 customers in the EAP and this is your chance to get early access to powerful new features and directly influence how the board view evolves in Jira.

We’ll also make this available via Jira Labs once the EAP concludes.

🎯 What we’ve been building

If you’ve been following our journey, the modernised board went GA to team-managed software boards in July (read our community post here) allowing us to unify 3 different board experiences, down to 2.

Now we’ve got our sights on unifying boards in company-managed spaces.

More than just a feature update, this is a completely overhauled board experience. We’ve made thousands of under-the-hood improvements to performance, design, and usability.

🤝 What we're looking for

We need teams who:

Use company-managed boards (either Scrum or Kanban) regularly to track and manage work.
Have a team lead/project manager (ideally with admin access) + 1-2 individual contributors willing to participate.
Are comfortable with early access software (some features still evolving).
Can provide candid feedback through surveys and 1-2 feedback sessions.

⚠️ Known gaps/caveats

As an early access this product is actively evolving — some features are still being refined, and you may notice changes to designs or functionality along the way.

Feature	Description	Our plan
Limited to single-space boards (i.e. simple boards)	Admins can use board filters to include work items from multiple spaces. Multi-space company-managed boards aren’t included in this program.	In the event the board’s scope is changed to reference more than one space, board will automatically revert back to the classic board. Multi-space (including global boards) is on our roadmap.
Add/create release from Board (Kanban)	Unique to company-managed Kanban boards — admins could create/select releases based on completed/shipped work items.	Not supported This feature has extremely low adoption/usage and not supported during the EAP and will likely be sunset on release.
Bulk select/change cards	Multiple cards (only in the same column) could be selected and transitioned on the board.	In development This feature is currently being redesigned and on the roadmap to be brought back however not be available during the EAP.
Work suggestions	Jira work suggestions provide task recommendations generated from multiple connected tools and could be managed in the board view settings.	Not supported Work suggestions in its current form is not supported on the new board. This was sunset as part of the rollout to team-managed software boards.

FAQs

What is a single-space board? How can I tell?

If your company-managed board filter includes work items from only one space, this is considered a single-space board.

If your board filter includes work items from more than one space, this is considered a multi-space board. Board filters that reference ALL work (i.e. from all spaces) is considered global or an unscoped board.

Both multi and global-scoped boards will continue to remain on the classic experience until we migrate those in a future milestone.

Can I opt-out of the new experience if so, how?

Yes, throughout the duration of the EAP program, users will be able to opt-out of the new experience.

What happens after the EAP ends?

Once the EAP concludes, your boards will revert back to the classic Jira board.

However, once we start rolling out to production, we will open this experience up to Jira Labs (beta).

Is it possible to opt-in early or get access after the EAP?

Yes - both EAP and non-EAP customers will be able to enable the new board experience once the product officially starts rolling out via Jira Labs toggle. This will occur shortly after the EAP concludes.

Please note: to enable this feature in Jira Labs you must be an organisation admin.

How can teams leave feedback?

Teams can share proactive feedback during the EAP using the in-product feedback button located in the top-right section of the board. This will get sent directly to our team for review.

When are modern Jira boards rolling out to customers?

We have decided on a 2-phased rollout at the conclusion of the EAP program. Starting with customers on the Free plan, we will gradually roll this out over the coming months.

During this team we will closely monitor for any feedback, or issues raised.

Our goal is to roll the new experience to multi-space boards eventually but likely won't be during the same rollout period as single-space.

We'll keep you posted on timings but we can't give a firm target date right now.

I like the 5000 work item limit removal on boards and the addition of min and max per column!

One odd thing I noticed on the Looms is the 5-10% of the vertical screen space that is wasted on the far right. Is this intentional with reason or overlooked?

I would love to be part of this EAP but we have so many boards and teams/space admins that it wil be difficult to choose a team on our end for this! But more than happy to see the progression and updates this takes and looking forward to it moving from EAP > Beta > GA.

@Zulfkar Ali I think you are referring to the 1st item in Known gaps/caveats - it is on the roadmap.

I like these changes!

One thing that is already rolled out for Team Managed spaces is the ability to collapse the columns. You have this listed under Board layout and navigation, but you did not show it in the video. It is a great feature, and I just want to make sure this is what you are referring to in that section?

@Yatish Madhav the board view settings allow to show the columns in fixed width or flexible width, the latter will expand and shrink to fill the available space.

This is a user setting (where the admin can save the default for the view) so you can select your preferred display option.

@__ Jimi Wikman this is the same board view we released to team-managed boards that we're now bringing to company-managed boards yes, so it does include the ability to collapse columns!

Once thing I don't understand in modern UI design is why everything needs to have rounded corners.
I understand that smart phones physically have rounded corners, or at least the displays have, because it provides better shock and impact resistance and a round corner is more comfortable to hold than a sharp one.

But I am in favor of the improved functionalities

Add/create release from Board (Kanban)

its planned to sunset. but, there a lot of usage from the companies I have worked for. When creating issues by selecting a version / release in the backlog, that will create the item directly to this release

Regarding Add/create release from Board (Kanban) we are specifically talking about the feature available in the Kanban board view where you can create a new release from the board and it will move all items in the last column to that newly created release:

This does not impact the release feature on the backlog view. Hope that clarifies.

Group by Categories no longer puts them into columns, it uses swimlanes instead. This is a problem:

The functionality that has been lost is: before we could drag and drop cards from one category column to another. This action automatically updated the category on the work item. Now that categories are only visible as swimlanes, there is no option to drag and drop cards from one category to another.

Boooo! Please don't take away existing functionality when adding "enhancements".

Column grouping only existed in business spaces, and indeed got changed to swimlanes layout to align with software spaces as we are harmonising board features and UI. This was shipped as part of 📣 We're bringing swimlanes to business Boards

On the ability to change category through drag and drop, it is still possible to do so! Dragging and dropping an item to a different category swimlane will update its category to the destination swimlane one. There is indeed a change however with swimlanes not showing for empty buckets, so categories without an item in your board are not shown as swimlanes.

On this, we're evaluating bringing the ability to inline edit the category from the board card directly in the future (the same way you can edit the assignee, priority, summary and parent fields), hopefully this will help with your use case. I can't share a firm date on this.

Hi,

I wonder if the grouping/filtering supports also child issues, e.g in my org we provide component per epic , when we tried to filter by component we can only view the relevant epic but not the stories , children beneath (since the field is not populated on the children),

This caused us to create automation or use another view we didn't want to use... on the Jira plan view we do have the ability to present children that are not necessary answer the parent filter can you provide the same for board view ?

Hey @Peter Oh, loving the new Modernised Software boards for one of my teams. The other team can't access it because of "Limited to single-space boards". Can you provide a realistic estimate of when multiple-space boards will have this available (1 month, 3 month, 6 month, etc)? This info will help us decide if we want to reluctantly migrate the multiple-space board to a single-space or wait it out.

Regarding modern boards for multi-space, we're aiming for end of calendar year, so ideally in the next three to four months however we are aiming to run an early access program for this which we'd be more than happy to accommodate your team.

You need to hit enter first to confirm the name, then you'll have to map statuses to the new column as it cannot be left empty. Once done the Publish button will be enabled. Hope that helps!

I am really liking the new layout!! Thank you!

I did run into this issue on this single space sprint board when attempting to drag and drop a story from one column to another. When dragging the story, the whole UI sort of freezes and all I can do next is scroll up or down. I am unable to do anything else on the page and need to perform a hard refresh of the page.

I can change the status from within the work item, but not from the sprint board.
