Work Items with CLOSED subtasks cannot be ranked in the Backlog

Hi,

Work Items with closed subtasks cannot be ranked in the Backlog.

The reason is because we use the following property in the CLOSED status of the subtasks workflow: jira.permission.edit.group, because we do not want people edit closed subtasks.

It seems that something changed in Jira because this worked fine before. I mean, we were able to move work items up and down time ago.

Backlog ranking depends on edit/rank permissions, and your closed subtasks have the workflow property jira.permission.edit.group on the Closed status. So once a parent has one of those subtasks underneath it, Jira may block moving the whole parent block in the backlog.

The first thing to test is simple, temporarily remove that property from the Closed subtask status, publish the workflow, and try ranking again. If it works after that, you have the cause.
