My JIRA space got deleted

Stephanos N

I tried accessing my JIRA space earlier today and I can no longer find it.

I've checked in the trash section as well and it's not there either.

I don't use JIRA on a daily basis but I did have a bunch of projects with links, attachments etc set up and now they're all gone

And as i'm on the free plan I can't even contact regular support

Can I even restore that space or it's pretty much gone?

Hello @Stephanos N

If the Space isn't in the Trash, it may have been permanently deleted, or it's possible you're looking at a different account or site than the one where the Space existed. Worth double-checking you're logged into the right Atlassian account.

On contacting support, Free plan users can still raise a ticket at support.atlassian.com ( No Log-in way, you just won't get priority response times). It's worth doing this urgently as Atlassian may have backups they can restore from, but that window is typically time-limited.

Unfortunately the community can't access your site or restore anything directly, so support is your best path here.

Hello @Stephanos N

You said your Space was gone. Are there other Jira Spaces still accessible on the site?

Are you the only user of the site, or are there other users of the site?

Is this a subscription that you set up or does it belong to somebody else?

In a free subscription all users have Administrator access for every Space . Therefore any user could've deleted a Space. Spaces are cleared from the Trash after 60 days, or the Space can be manually deleted from the Trash. Once deleted there is no way to restore the data unless you have made a backup.

When was the last time anybody accessed Jira data on the site?

Atlassian had a policy of deactivating and eventually deleting the data for Free subscriptions that are left inactive for an extended period of time. Atlassian sends warning emails to the Organization Admins when the subscription had been inactive advising that the data needs to be accessed or the site will be deactivated. The send another email on the day of deactivation warning that the data will be deleted soon. The data can be deleted as soon as 25 days after that.

So is this a case of one Space among many having been deleted, or of a subscription having been deactivated and deleted an the restarted?

If you think this is a case of a deactivated and deleted subscription, you can reach out to the Billing, Licensing, Pricing Support team to get an authoritative answer whether your subscription was deleted. You can contact them through

https://www.atlassian.com/company/contact/purchasing-licensing#/

Free subscription owners indeed cannot open a case with Atlassian Technical Support at https://support.atlassian.com/contact/#

That is a limitation of the Free subscription.

Sorry to hear that it's gone - this is why backups of your data are critical (especially in SaaS apps like Jira / Confluence where many people have access).
Did you happen to install a backup app from the marketplace (like Rewind?) before deleting it? They could help you restore it if you did.
If not, and it's not in the trash, then it's likely gone forever.

Hi @Mike - Founder at Rewind

As a reminder...when recommending a marketplace vendor product, please ensure you disclose your affiliation to that vendor in your post wording, and not just in your profile name / badge. For more information, please see:

Thanks for the tips Arkadiusz!

I was the only person using the space and only have one account. It's just an easy way to project manage 'life' that's how I was using it

Stephanos N

Hey Trudy,

I only had one jira space the one that was deleted
it was just myself using it just as a way to project manage 'life' nobody else had access
it's not appearing in the trash section sadly
last time i accessed was roughly 3 weeks ago. I do sometimes get emails from atlassian about my confluence being deactivated but i just log in to ensure it's not. The most recent email i got was about my account being deactivated on the 04/19 so it's odd my jira space was gone yet my confluence is still there
thankfullly i didnt have sensitive docs or anything just a bunch of project trackers about different stuff i've been working on at a personal level

Hello @Stephanos N

I have flagged your post here to raise it to the attention of Atlassian team members who will have the ability to investigate the issue. They should get back to you within 2 business days.

If you logged into the Jira app UI specifically as recently as 3 weeks ago then Atlassian should not have deactivated your subscription. And if you are the only user of the environment there is no reason to expect that the project would've been deleted. Atlassian does not delete data within a subscription; they only deactivate entire subscriptions.

Camille Juzeau

Hi Stephanos,

Did you manage to find your jira project ? It happens exactly the same for me. All my jira project disappeared a few days ago while it was still working a month ago (and I was receiving notifications on my email account reminding me due date for applications).

It feels very frustrating as I spent time and energy to develop that space and I have no longer access to the info anymore without any notice from atlassian.

If anyone got the same issue and have a solution to share.

Many thanks for your help !

Lucie from Collectif Parade.

Hello @Camille Juzeau

If you were receiving emails that your subscriptions were at risk of deactivation due to inactivity, and received an email that your subscription was actually deleted just a couple of days ago, then you should be able to reactivate it by going to https;//admin.atlassian.com/billing , selecting your billing account, selecting Subscriptions, click the Inactive tab, and click the Reactivate button next to your subscription with the recent Cancelled On date.

If that isn't available to you then reach out to Billing, Licensing, Pricing support through this page:
