Jira Dashboard for Sprint Velocity Across Multiple Scrum Teams – Alternatives to Velocity Gadget

Aanchal Bhatnagar

I have a question regarding Jira dashboards:

We have several scrum teams working within the same Jira project, and we’d like to track and visualize sprint velocity (story points completed per sprint) for each team on a dashboard. However, the Velocity gadget is not available in our instance.

Is it possible to create a Jira dashboard showing sprint velocity for multiple teams in a single project without access to the Velocity gadget? Are there any alternative gadgets, built-in features, or recommended workarounds (without third-party apps) that could help us achieve this?

If not, what marketplace apps would you suggest for this purpose?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi @Aanchal Bhatnagar

I recommend checking the marketplace to search for apps / dashboard gadgets to meet your needs: https://marketplace.atlassian.com/

And first...perhaps pause to list what you want to measure / see in such visualizations. What are your specific constraints? Perhaps also discuss this with your Jira Product Admin to learn if your company has already purchased marketplace apps.

Then with your needs clarified, select some marketplace options to try and see which ones help your teams.

Kind regards,
Bill

Hi @Aanchal Bhatnagar

I'm Mariia from SaaSJet.

If you’re open to third-party apps and want something more tailored, you might want to check out AI Apps Builder for Jira, the app I'm working on.

AI Apps Builder lets you create custom dashboards and gadgets by simply describing what you need in plain English — no coding required. For example, you could ask something like this: “Create a dashboard that shows sprint velocity per team for the last 6 sprints in the same project. Display it as a bar chart grouped by sprint and team.”

Here is the video gide how it works:

I hope it will help.

Hi @Aanchal Bhatnagar

For an alternate solution, if you would be interested in a mktplace app for this requirement, pls do take a look at
Agile Velocity & Sprint Status Gadgets

You can easily define the Sprints or no of Sprints to view the velocity.

The app comes with few dashboard gadgets to track team member's / team's velocity / productivity based on story points / time spent / issue count in a sprint and also track sprint status with multiple parameters.

Hi @Aanchal Bhatnagar,

Jira does not offer a Velocity gadget, so there is no way to display velocity on a dashboard using Jira’s native gadgets. You could try using the Velocity report instead (available in the space Reports section), but this is not available for dashboards.

The solution would be to search for a plugin on Atlassian Marketplace.

If you are willing to try a plugin, our Great Gadgets app offers some potential options here.

Team Velocity gadget - can display the velocity based in the sprints from a selected Scrum board. It can display metrics like work committed or work completed, as well as advanced metrics like scope change or % completion.

Kanban Velocity / Throughput gadget - can display the amount of work done along the time. You could use this gadget to display not a per-team velocity, but a global velocity (a the project level, across all teams)

Pivot Table & Pivot Chart gadget - can display the velocity in term of amount of work done in every sprint, split by team. Useful if you have multiple teams working on the same sprint, and you use a Team field to separate the work.

See more example and details about these gadgets and the many others designed for multi-team projects in this article: https://community.atlassian.com/forums/App-Central-articles/How-to-track-scaled-agile-SAFe-projects-in-Jira-with-Great/ba-p/1929694

Hope this helps.

Hi @Aanchal Bhatnagar ,

Natively, it's not supported, unfortunately. You can try the app I developed - Multi-team Scrum Metrics & Retrospectives.

With it, you can view:

Data across sprints, months, quarters, half-years or years.
Several teams (including those ones sharing the same project) at once.
Velocity, capacity, allocation, completed story points (completed scope), planned (initial, final scopes), added and removed scopes, as well as other metrics. You can even create your own custom metrics using JQL.
Trends and average metrics across periods.
And many more.

3 boards/teams in the same view, 1 period selected for analysis:

3 boards/teams in the same view, all periods are clicked for average metrics and dynamics:

Additionally, you will be able to conduct quantifiable retrospectives.

I am based in Toronto. Please let me know if you want to touch base.

Best regards,
Alexey

Thanks Maria for your answer, this is helpful. I believe I may get in touch with my JIRA admin to check if we are using any third-party apps. I appreciate your help. Thanks.

Hi Danut, these visuals looks great and yeah I did try to found out alternatives and it seems like we might use confluence as that is only best feasible option we are seeing to manually build such reports. But I really appreciate your response too. Thanks.

Aanchal Bhatnagar

Thanks Rahul - We are not going with marketplace app at the moment. I really appreciate your response too. Thanks.

Aanchal Bhatnagar

Thanks Alexey, these metrics looks good to me, let me get this checked too.

Sure, we can touch base. Thanks.

Hi @Aanchal Bhatnagar,

These gadgets are also available as macros for Confluence Cloud.

See https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1226592/great-gadgets-for-confluence-agile-charts-custom-reports?hosting=cloud&tab=overview

If you need a demo or have any questions, please write to support@stonikbyte.com. I’ll be happy to assist you with building these reports.

This is exactly the use case SprintPulse for Jira was built for.

It aggregates data across multiple Jira projects and shows
velocity, cycle time, sprint completion rate, and bug ratio
in a single dashboard. Works with Jira Cloud and Server/DC.

Self-hosted via Docker — one URL shared with the whole team.
Search "SprintPulse for Jira" on the Atlassian Marketplace.

Hi Aanchal,

We ran into the same thing, multiple scrum teams in one project and the native Velocity gadget not available, so I'll just share what we use.

We went with PM Overview (https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1231978). It pulls story points completed per sprint into a team velocity chart, and since you choose the board feeding each view, you get velocity per team rather than one blended project number. It also shows story point completion and sprint progress, which our stakeholders ended up wanting alongside the velocity numbers.

It's Cloud only, and there's a free tier, so you can point it at a couple of boards and see if the multi-team view works for you before committing.

Hope that helps.
