Importing/Exporting workflows in Jira Cloud

Hi there,

I'm aware that for Jira Data Center, there is support to import/export XML workflow's, I was wondering whether this support had been enabled for Jira Cloud? I've seen other forum posts that recommend using the third party tool Workflow Wizard, or listing the workflow on the Atlassian Marketplace, would also appreciate if these tools are valid alternatives if the support for Jira Cloud is not available yet.

Jira Cloud doesn’t currently support direct import/export of workflows like Jira Data Center does — XML workflow migration isn’t available out of the box.
Third-party tools like Workflow Wizard are valid alternatives and commonly used to migrate, copy, or share workflows across Cloud instances. Another approach is to recreate workflows manually using the Atlassian Marketplace templates, though that’s more time-consuming

Hi James,

In Jira Cloud, if you click the settings Icon and then select Work Types >> Workflows.

When you view the workflow in the old workflow editor, you will see an export dropdown, which you can click on to export it as shown below. Screenshot 2025-11-27 at 16.23.50.png

This will allow you to export workflows used by Company Managed projects, and there is no way to export workflows used by Team Managed projects.

Hi James,

In my experience, trying to export and import a workflow is a waste of time and way harder and time consuming that just creating the workflow from scratch.

Would you be exporting from another Cloud instance or from Data Center? If from another Cloud instance, there is an easy way to do that.

Thanks for the initial responses here. To give a little bit more extra context, the use case we have is to create repeatable jira configuration's hence the reason why my initial idea was to look at reusable workflow's which we would initially create, but then offer to other companies that would be linked in with the workflow we create to onboard a managed service we're offering! We'd be looking to export from a Jira Cloud instance to other cloud projects, and not data center projects as far as I'm aware.

Thanks for the clarification. If you are going from Jira Cloud to Jira Cloud, that is exactly what I have done many times using the Revyz Configuration Manager for Jira app found in the Atlassian Marketplace. You can copy a single workflow or you can copy an entire project and all of the configurations on the project. This app does not cone any data - just configurations. They have a different tool if you clone data with the configurations.

It can be a pain to figure out how to use REST API for the uninitiated, but it is possible to do export/import calls with Jira automation, Postman/Hoppscotch, Scriptrunner, Python scripts ran locally or Github actions, etc.
