Recommendations for GitHub add ons

Scott Derderian

Good Morning. We have recently migrated from JIRA Data Center to JIRA Cloud, and are now starting to explore GitHub Integration.

We are evaluating add ons and would like any recommendations that anyone has, taking functionality and cost effectiveness into consideration.

Any and all input is appreciated. TIA!!!!

Hi @Scott Derderian ,

Thank you for the question.

I would like to suggest the evaluation of the following apps:

Atlassian official connector: https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1219592/github-for-atlassian?hosting=cloud&tab=overview
Connector by Gitkraken (used and proposed several times): https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/4984/git-integration-for-jira-azure-devops-github-gitlab?hosting=cloud&tab=overview

I hope it helps

Hi @Scott Derderian,

If you want to display data from GitHub in Jira dashboards, you can take a look at our DevOps Gadgets for Jira (Insights from GitHub & BB) app. It provides dashboard gadgets for viewing:

latest build status
recent commits
recent pipelines runs
recent pull requests

It has the advantage of being able to display this data not only to developers, but also to QAs, PMs, etc. who do not have access to GitHub repositories; it does not expose the source code.

Danut.

I second this!

Pragmatic approach:

Start with the Atlassian app. Simply because it is free. If meets your requirements, then use it.
Otherwise use the Git Integration app.

Hi @Scott Derderian

You’ve made the jump from Jira Data Center to Jira Cloud, and now you're diving into GitHub integration—exciting stuff! When it comes to evaluating add-ons for this, here are a few things to consider:

Core Functionality: Think about what exactly you need in the integration. Are you looking to sync commits, pull requests, issues, or branches? Defining these needs early on will help you narrow down options.
Ease of Use: Some integrations are super easy to set up and use, while others might require more configuration. You’ll want something that fits your team's workflow and is easy to adopt.
Cost-Effectiveness: Depending on the size of your team and the volume of integration, costs can vary. Some integrations are pretty affordable, but make sure to factor in scalability—especially if your usage grows.
Real-time Sync: If you need real-time updates between GitHub and Jira, look for an add-on that offers that feature. This ensures your developers and project managers stay in sync without manual updates.

If you want a solution that goes beyond simple GitHub integration, you may explore OpsHub, an Atlassian Solution Partner, that offers deep data sync between GitHub and Jira, including real-time updates and keeping everything in sync automatically.

Good luck for your integration journey!

Javier Pozuelo -Exalate-

Hi @Scott Derderian, I'm the community manager at Exalate.

As others have mentioned, the official GitHub for Jira connector is a good place to start, especially if you’re just exploring the integration and want to cover the essentials like commits, and pull requests to Jira issues.

If along the way you realize you need more flexibility, for example, syncing issue details, custom fields, or keeping data aligned across multiple GitHub organizations or Jira projects, then it’s worth looking into Marketplace alternatives. Exalate is one of those options, built to give each side full control over what information is shared and how it flows, so you can tailor the integration to your processes rather than adjusting your workflow to fit the tool.

If you have any questions, you can reach out to the Exalate community

Good luck with the integration!

Hello @Scott Derderian

The official GitHub for Jira app is definitely the right way to get started if you just need the basics like linking commits and pull requests.

For teams that plan to keep Jira and GitHub in sync long-term (issues, fields, multiple repos/projects, etc.), Atlassian Marketplace integrations can help a lot. I work as a Growth Specialist at Getint, and besides the native option, I’d suggest giving this solution a try as it’s designed for Jira ↔ GitHub synchronization.

No matter what you'll choose, good luck with the project

@Scott Derderian , hi & congrats on the Cloud move! If you just want clean visibility—commits, branches, PRs, deployments—the official GitHub for Jira app is the easiest place to start and usually covers day-to-day needs. If your requirement is true two-way sync (issues, comments, fields staying aligned in both tools), look at the Atlassian marketplace - it comes with a variety of useful options, like ZigiOps. It's a fully no-code integration tool that can handle flexible mappings and direction rules so teams can keep working where they prefer. It's easy to deploy and put into use in minutes. If you wan to explore it - feel free to start your free trial or book a short demo.

Is anyone hesitant to use these integrations because granting write permissions opens up supply chain attack vectors, such as a pull-request infiltration paired with a GitHub Action that executes a deployment? What's your opinion on this and the associated risks? How do you mitigate?
