Is there any way to insert a new hierarchy level in between epic and all other standard work types, i.e., Story. I'd like a custom hierarchy where I can slot in my own custom issue type called New Feature, like below

Epic -> New Feature -> Story (and all other standard types)

As I noted in my reply, the original Epic issue cannot be moved to another level. You could rename the Epic issue type to "New Feature" and then create a new issue type with the name Epic, adding it to level 2. There are other important notes in my reply on that other thread which you should review.

I understand that you are on Jira Premium? In that case it would be possible to add a new work item level between Epic and Story. You need to rename your current Work Item level for Epic to "New feature" and add Epic to a new work item level above your "New feature"

I word of caution:

This might affect how third party apps work since they might expect that Epic is on the standard hierarchy level.
This is a global feature so it will affect all your projects.

I would recommend testing this out in a sandbox environment before making changes in production.

To add to what @Staffan Redelius said, if you're on Jira Premium plan and admin, you can navigate to Jira settings > Work type hierarchy and change the settings from there. But it's a good idea to test it out in a sandbox environment because it'll affect all company-managed projects.

Hi Staffan,

Thank you got getting back so quickly. I have tried your suggestion. I can create a new level but i cannot remove Epic from its existing level (level 1) nor can i add it to any newly created levels. Any suggestions?

Have you checked out the info @Brita Moorus added? I think that explains it very well. You will need to rename the Epic level to New Feature and add Epic as the new level above New feature

This is the standard setup:
Epic (level 1)
Story (level 0)
Sub-Task (level -1)

Your setup after changes:
Epic (level 2)
New Feature (level 1)
Story (level 0)
Sub-Task (level -1)

@Trudy P Claspill thanks for your input. I think what I'll do is use the existing hierarchy and communicate back to the users how things work. To get it to work in this custom way doesn't seem worth the effort.

To insert a custom hierarchy level (e.g., "New Feature" between Epic and Story):

Create a Custom Issue Type (e.g., "New Feature").
Go to Advanced Roadmaps > Hierarchy Configuration.
Add "New Feature" between Epic and Story in the hierarchy settings.
Now, you can track "Epic -> New Feature -> Story" in your plans.
