Hi Richard,
The excel file should be an standard CSV, the only requisite is that you include a summary field, and the issue key if you want to make an update.
Example
summary,reporter,assignee,description,priority Test,admin,admin,Description,Medium
You can choose at the import form, the csv separator, date format and encoding.
