Need assistance building a dashboard for a specific metric

Question

All our engineering work goes into one of three categories which is noted at the Epic level. There is custom field in the Epic that has these options. I have been asked to have visibility into what the teams have in the active sprints and the % of each category they are working on.

So ideally, if looking at a dashboard widget;

Team A - sprint 1

Category 1 = 4 stories
Category 2 = 6 stories
Category 3 = 2 stories

Any direction would be appreciated

I've bi-passed this by using automation to populate the field inside the story. This is giving me the results I've been asked. Thank you!

If every single story had it populated, than it's an easy solve. However, I'm trying to avoid the overhead of populating so many issues for all 5 of our teams. Unless the jira automation tool can auto populate the child stories with that information. Is that an option?

Would it be possible / feasible to copy the Epic Category into the Story?  Here, for example, I'm using the Issue Statistics gadget on the filter for the project Mobile Dev. I have configured it so that the issues are filtered by the Patent, where you can see the breakdown as a percentage.

Do you think this would work? Does this help you at all?
