Can I use AI to draft release notes in Jira?

C_ Martin

Hello!

My company is currently using Aha's AI functionality to help automate the process of drafting release notes. Does Jira have anything similar to help with this? I've been researching Atlassian Intelligence, but I can't find information on drafting release notes.

We have Jira Cloud Premium.

Thank you!

Actually Atlassian AI can help with release notes but you have to use Rovo agent to do so. When you purchase Rovo licensing there are templated Rovo agent available. One of those agents is a release notes Rovo drafter.

In addition to Anand's recommendation, you may also want to check the Released app as alternative.

Hi @C_ Martin , you are right. Jira (at least as of today) does not offer the ability to draft release notes using AI. You can set something up easily with Jira automation integrating with OpenAI API or Zapier.

Or you can explore the apps on the marketplace.

PS - I am from Amoeboids & our app Automated release notes & reports can be helpful. There is even a free version for Cloud.

Hi @C_ Martin

At Appbox, we’ve built AI-powered apps that can help streamline this process. Generating release notes is just one use case.

GPT Hub can intelligently scan your Jira Tickets (based on a JQL) and generate release notes according to your format.

For example, in the demo below, I gave the following AI Prompt to get the output. You can write your own prompt.

Analyze these Jira issues and generate comprehensive release notes. Ensure the notes include a summary of key updates, new features, enhancements, bug fixes, and any performance or security improvements. Use clear, professional language and structure the notes with appropriate sections, such as 'New Features,' 'Improvements,' 'Bug Fixes,' and 'Other Updates.' Provide context where necessary, including affected components, benefits to users, and any relevant links or additional information.

@C_ Martin In addition to generating release notes, Released also allows you to create and share roadmaps with customers or stakeholders.

Unlike Aha, these roadmaps are backed by Jira tickets and automatically keep in sync.

Here a short video of how it works.

Hi @C_ Martin

As mentioned above if you have Jira Premium you can try a Rovo agent to achieve this.

If you're looking for a dedicated app that will solve this for you we just released (no pun intended) Release Notes AI. It opens up right inside your projects and lets you generate Release Notes using AI with the click of a button.

You can also customise the style and format by editing the system prompt.

Full disclosure, I'm the app creator.

Hope that helps!

Kind Regards,

Rhys

Hi @C_ Martin, I’m from eesel AI. Our AI can help draft release notes directly from your Jira tickets, giving you a solid first draft that you can tweak as needed.

You can definitely draft release notes in Jira with AI, but Jira doesn’t ship a dedicated release note generator like Aha does. Most teams use Atlassian Intelligence to summarize issues in a version and turn that into a first draft. A simple trick is to filter all issues in a specific release, bulk-copy them into the AI prompt, and ask it to structure them by highlights, fixes, and improvements. It’s not fully automated, but it cuts the writing time way down. You can also combine it with Confluence if you want a cleaner publishing workflow.
