Unable to Create New Component from View or Edit Issue Screen

I have a user who says this used to be a feature. Does anyone know if it recently was deprecated by Jira?

We can create new components from the Components section of the project settings, as well as while creating a new issue (type the component name and click "Create New"). However, this same "Create New" option does not appear when trying to View or Edit an existing issue. Is that working as designed?

I have the same issue and it's amazing how all of the replies are missing the request. The accepted answer doesn't actually address the original question.

When creating an issue, the component field allows for adding new components on-the-fly. If you type text and the component does not exist, you will get an option that shows your typed component text with " (New Component)" appended to it. If you select this, the new component will be added on the fly.

When viewing an issue (since there is no separate edit screen any more), you can NOT add a component on the fly. If you type the name of a component that does not exist it simply says "No matches found". Instead you now have to go to the Project Settings > Components and add it there. It's tedious.

Clearly the functionality to add components on-the-fly exists, it just doesn't seem to be enabled when viewing an issue.

I do not recall there being an option to create a new Component directly from the Component field in an issue.

I doubt that was ever something they could do. They are probably thinking about Labels, which you can do that. But probably not with Components because you must be a Project Administrator or Jira Admin to be able to create those.

Is it correct to assume that only a user assigned to the Administrate Project permission will get that option, since creating Components requires that permission?

@Trudy P Claspill yes thats correct, any user with project admin role should be able to create a component from the side panel and from the create issue view

Hello John, they are a Project Admin, and it does work on Create! Just not Edit, which I can't figure out, and this was not a common method I ever used for creating Components and I could not find any documentation about it.

Oh, make sure the Components field is on the Edit screen for the project then.

Thanks, I did check that too and it's there! Maybe this was always the case but this user says it wasn't, and it doesn't make sense to me it would only exist on creating a new issue.

An accepted answer does not necessarily mean the problem is solved. It may mean there is an explanation provided for the behaviour that is observed, which is the case here.

The behaviour observed is that new Components can't be created from the view/edit screen. The explanation is that such functionality is not supported specifically in the view/edit screen.

It may not solve the "problem", which is the desire to create Components from the view/edit screen, but it does explain the current behaviour.

The next step in this case is to up vote the change request asking for the functionality to be added to the view/edit screen:

@Chris Kite - Actually you are actually in Edit mode automatically when you enter a screen that is attached to the Default (assuming no separate Edit/View screen exists) or Edit function in the screen scheme. It is not strictly just viewing. So your second point is what has already been made in several of the answers. The original question was about adding a Component on the fly in the Edit screen.

In this case if you look at the accepted answer, it doesn't answer the question of "can you create new components from the view/edit screen"; it simply mentions you can add them on the fly when creating an issue. The question is answered later in the last reply, but you have to read through all of the replies to find that out.

@John Funk , I'm aware you're able to edit fields when viewing the screen. However you are "viewing" the issue and when needed can edit a single field (vs the old Edit screen that let you edit multiple fields at once). Also, Atlassian calls this the "new issue view", hence why I refer to it as "viewing" an issue.
