I'm a big fan of visualizing the project timeline with all tasks and interdependencies. But only epics show up with a visual marker in the timeline view, the tasks underneath do not. Is there a way I can make that happen?

Go to the board configuration of the project your timeline belongs to and right there, enable the Include Child level Issues toggle. That should make scheduling for child issues possible.
Note that they must have a parent epic for them to show up on the timeline as well ...
