Create a new hirerarchy for a project

Vidya VASUDEVAN_dnoojr

Can you please help me create a new hierarchy in JIRA for project We would like to have in the project “Feature” as parents of “Requirement”. I believe it’s possible through the global settings The hierarchy we want to create is Epic > Feature > Requirement.. This is the request that I have received from the user.

Can any one help me with this..

Hi @Vidya VASUDEVAN

just to add to Mark's great answer:

You may already know that Jira Premium allows additional hierarchy levels, however these hierarchy levels are always only on top of epics. Adding something below epics is possible, but tricky - see this thread for a thorough discussion on the matter.

As you'll see in the linked discussion, one way to implement your exact hierarchy could be via issue links. Issue links give you full flexibility in how you want to model your hierarchy.

The downside is that issue links aren't natively recognised as parent/child relationships, so you won't get a lot of hierarchy-related features out of the box. This being said, if you're open to solutions from the Atlassian Marketplace, there's a number of hierarchy-related apps available that can help with this.

E.g., this is how a hierarchy similar to yours could look in the app that my team and I are working on, JXL for Jira:

(In this example, features and stories are connected to each other via issue links.)

Any questions just let me know,

Best,

Hannes

Hi @Vidya VASUDEVAN

No this can't be done, unless your issue types are like this.

Epic -> Epic

Feature -> Level 1 story level

Requirement -> Level 2 sub-task level

With Jira ootb on project level, there can't be a level placed between Epic and Level 1 issues (Story, Task, Bug, etc...)

Otherwise this can only be achieved by using a 3rd party app like Structure.

Will it impact the global settings if , like if I create the new hierarchy , will it affect all other projects or only one project, because I want to create the new hirerachy only for one project and that is for team managed project.
