Best way to track Original Estimate and Time Spent in JIRA

Question

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to build a report and calculate Original Estimate and Time spent of each ticket, and added up to Initiative level. I am using JIRA TEMPO Structure, which is a really good tool, But the calculation seems a bit off.

1) How can I enhance these 2 fields / columns to show exactly what am I expecting to display

2) 3rd party tool to capture these values manually ?

As an alternative, you can try the Project Progress Report by ActivityTimeline.

The report allows users to see the progress by Jira project, epic, initiative, or by Jira filter based on the percentage of the completion of the child issues in the hierarchy.

Users can select the highest level of the hierarchy in the report in the configuration as well as what fields to show in the report:

When the report is generated, the full hierarchy of issues is shown starting from the sub-task level up to the highest level of the hierarchy in the report. It is also possible to hide “done” or child issues from the report, but they will still be included in the calculation of the report:

The best thing I can recommend is to make use of custom column formula's! They have been incredibly valuable to use for us. The scripts that you write on the back end are written in EXPR, and I can tell you there's a ton of possibilities on how you can calculate any variety of thing, and have whatever the output is be written in a way that is approachable to any user or intended audience. For instance, we've written a bunch if IF/ELSES that do things like comparing the "target end" (our baseline estimate dates) and the "end date" (actual date of completion). If its 1 day over we have the cell say "1 Day Late". If its greater than 1 day, we take total days, and write " XX Days Late". We do similar for 1 day early or however many days greater than 1 early. If something is missing a story point value, instead of nothing we make it say "Needs Estimate". Our Story Points are simple in that 1 day = 1 story point. So its great for duration estimates without a fixed dates. Great for early planning. When a story point value is given, we make the cell say "XX Days".

Take it from someone who is not known for their beautiful scripting ability. I am a PM heavy skill set with a solid understanding of Jira/Confluence functionality. What makes that column so valuable, is I know what I want, and I can get a script to get it, and display it in a way that makes logical sense to people when I present the Gantt Chart and/or the WBS out of Structure. Its fantastic. Don't be afraid to try and write some EXPR scripts. I forced myself to learn how and after about a week or so, I started to get it. I think you could to :)  Hope that helps!
