Create a Read-Only custom field in Jira

Question

I need to make a custom field read-only but visible on the edit screen. I see several related questions have been asked, but none are recent.

Is there a straightforward way in Jira to create a custom field and associate it with screens, and the user cannot edit the field when viewed on the issue edit screen?

I want to populate the value of the custom field via automation rather than have the user enter it on the issue screen.

It seems there should be a read-only option for custom fields. Has anyone solved this without using JavaScript, modifying the workflow, or hiding it?

As @[deleted]and @Yong Yang said, no there isn't. The only option is to put it on the view screen. The edit screen is for fields you want the user to be able to edit.

Hi, the only possible Atlassian gives us right now (native) is to Hide a Field or make it required in the Field Configuration.

The only straight forward possibility is to put the field in the view but not the edit Screen which allows the Field to be populated via e.g. automation but not for the user to change it.

If you want the field to change regardless, you could put it into a Transition Screen to update there. Maybe even in a Transition Loop that is always usable: A Transition from "Any Status" to "Itself".

You could configure that custom field in the View screen, but not in the Edit screen.
